Nothing in the path of totality is inside 3 hours of Flaga
The umbra crosses only western Iceland. From Flaga, greater Reykjavík is 3 h 15 away and the good Reykjanes spots are 3 h 45 to 3 h 55, so your 3.5 hour rule rules most of them out. Exactly one strong spot survives it.
Vegagerðin starts traffic management at 08:00 and expects heavy congestion across the west, so the real drive will be longer than the map says. Roads at Grótta, Ægisíða, Suðurgata and Álftanes are closed or one-way from 15:00 to 20:00.

Grótta is off limits and both shore roads are closed 15:00–20:00.
Routed properly, no spot with more than 1m 05s of totality is inside your 3.5 hour rule. Álftanes at 3 h 37 is the only open site that meets it. Kálfatjörn, marked on day 3, is 4 h 11: it buys 23 more seconds and costs about 70 minutes of driving. Garðskagi has the best totality of the three at 1m 43s and is 4 h 15 away.
If it is cloudy
Clear-sky odds on the west coast are about one in three, and you said Reykjavík only if it is sunny. If the morning forecast is poor, option C stays at Flaga for a 97% partial and saves seven hours of driving. Chasing better cloud means Snæfellsnes, which is five hours from Flaga and not realistic.
Pack for an eighteen hour day out: full tank, all her food and nappies, warm layers, blankets, a torch, water. The temperature drops noticeably inside the umbra. Roadside stopping is prohibited that day.

Skógafoss: car park to the base is flat, five minutes, pushchair works. Parking about 1,000 ISK in the Parka app.
Seljalandsfoss: the path behind the fall has slippery steps and heavy spray. View it from the front with her; one of you can do the loop.
Krónan is at Austurvegur 3-5, the first thing you reach after the Ölfusá bridge. Open 10:00 to 20:00. After that it is small shops only in Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
Vogar is 16 minutes from Kálfatjörn, your eclipse spot. No use to you, since you are at Flaga on the 12th, but you will notice it on the map.
Confirm the check-in time with Flaga. The plan lands you there at 17:45.
Everything is on one road east, and the day is built backwards from the 13:40 boat. Nothing here needs a walk longer than fifteen minutes.

Optional. Open boat, ~30 min, 14,200 ISK for the two of you, she rides free. Decide on the weather when you arrive; skipping gets you home an hour earlier.
Fjaðrárgljúfur is 25 minutes away, so do it first while she is fresh. 1,000 ISK parking, lower viewpoint 10–15 minutes, unfenced drops on the upper path.
Fjallsárlón: free car park 600 m off the Ring Road, café and toilets, and a short walk up the rise to the lagoon. The glacier tongue is far closer here than at Jökulsárlón, so this is where you stand in front of a glacier. Thirty minutes.
Do not substitute Svínafellsjökull. Civil Protection advises against travel there because of an unstable slope above the glacier, and guided trips have been suspended.
Fjallsárlón at 11:00, lagoon at 11:50, lunch at the café at 12:00, Diamond Beach at 13:00, boat at 13:40. Adults 7,100 ISK, she is free, so 14,200 ISK for the three of you.
Do not pre-book the boat. Tickets are not time-specific and boats leave every 15 minutes, so buy them when you park at 11:50, for the first departure after 13:30. That way you see the weather first and still skip the queue.
Whether it is worth it comes down to wind, not rain. It is an open boat on glacial water, so the thing that ruins it is wind chill. Rule of thumb: under about 5 m/s go, over about 8 m/s do not bother. In calm conditions being among the bergs is genuinely different from looking at them, and the guide fishes out a lump of thousand-year-old ice to touch.
The shore and Diamond Beach are free and are the main event either way. Skipping saves 14,200 ISK and 50 minutes and gets you back to Flaga before 16:00.
Just under eight hours of driving for a minute of totality. Of the open sites, only Álftanes is within 3.5 hours of Flaga.

Eclipse day, and much the longest: seventeen hours out. Leave well ahead of the 08:00 traffic plan. Driving is routed over the real road network at a conservative pace; a brisk run saves roughly 58 minutes across the day, ending about 22:38.
The only open site within 3.5 hours of Flaga, and the closest totality of the lot at 241 km.
Leave 07:30, ahead of the 08:00 traffic management. Kleifarvatn and Seltún fill the morning: a black lake with an easy shore, then a 20 minute boardwalk over boiling mud.
Be parked on the west-facing shore by mid-afternoon and do not move the car again. One-way traffic on Álftanes from 15:00 to 20:00, and this is the most crowded area in the country that day.
Grótta is off limits and Ægisíða and Suðurgata are closed to cars, so Álftanes is the only open shore in the capital area.
Totality is about 1m 05s. Leaving around 20:00 puts you back at Flaga about 23:35, most of it in the dark.

Reynisfjara: sneaker waves have killed visitors. Obey the light at the entrance, red means closed. Feb 2026 storms stripped sand and exposed boulders, so it is steeper than in most photos.
Dyrhólaey is ten minutes on and gives the same view from a clifftop with no wave risk. Unfenced edges, carrier only.
From Vík it is 190 km in one go. She should sleep most of it.
Reynisdrangar, the sea stacks, are visible from both Reynisfjara and Dyrhólaey.
Almost every stop is within a few hundred metres of a car park, and the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir sits on the way home from Gullfoss.

Þingvellir: park at the upper car park (P1) and take the boardwalk down Almannagjá. Pushchair works.
Geysir: Strokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes. The ground beside the path is boiling, so carry her or hold her hand.
Friðheimar: lunch inside a working tomato greenhouse. Tomato soup with unlimited bread about 3,740 ISK. Kitchen serves 11:30 to 16:00. Must be pre-booked and it sells out.
Gullfoss: the upper viewpoint is paved from the car park. The lower stairs are steep and permanently wet.
Secret Lagoon at Flúðir on the way back: no minimum age, adults 4,500 ISK, ages 14 and under 260 ISK, open to 20:00. Ninety minutes in the water before the drive home.
The zoo, Hallgrímskirkja and the Lava Show, all within 4 km of each other. Hlíðarás is in Ásland, upper Hafnarfjörður, so each leg into town is a 10 to 12 minute drive rather than a walk.
Every stop is within about 11 km of the others, so a map adds nothing here. The Google Maps link has them all.

Zoo open 10:00–18:00 in summer, 11 minutes from Hlíðarás: seals, arctic fox, reindeer, farm animals, small rides. Ages 0–5 free, 6–12 1,050 ISK, adults 1,500 ISK.
Hallgrímskirkja: the tower lift gives the view over the coloured roofs. It is a church, not the cathedral. The actual cathedral, Dómkirkjan, is by the parliament.
Lava Show on Grandi melts real basalt to 1,100 °C and pours it into the room. Roughly 50 minutes.
On age: there is no hard minimum and she can come on a child ticket, but they do not recommend it under 5 and seat babies in the third row near an exit. It is dark, loud and suddenly very hot. Book the earliest slot and sit by the door.
Grandi also has Whales of Iceland next door if the show is a bust. Park once at Grandi and do both.

This is the day Hafnarfjörður earns its place. Seltún is 19 minutes away and Kleifarvatn 15, so the whole Reykjanes loop starts on your doorstep and ends at the airport.

All short walks: Seltún boardwalk, Kleifarvatn, Brimketill lava pool, the Bridge Between Continents, and Garðskagi’s two lighthouses with a café looking west.
Seltún is 19 minutes from Hlíðarás, so you are at the first stop before most people have left Reykjavík. Ends 20 minutes from the terminal.
Check almannavarnir.is that morning. The eruption series north of Grindavík has been quiet since 5 August 2025, but the Met Office reported in April 2026 that magma storage is the highest of the series so far.
For a shower before a night flight, stop at Sundhöllin or Laugardalslaug on the way out of town.
The nearest food to Flaga is the small Krónan in Vík, 37 minutes west, or the shop at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 26 minutes east. Neither is a supermarket, so the Selfoss shop on day 1 has to cover three days. Every meal is in the hour by hour above.

Soup for the thermos, extra bread, and double the snacks and water you think you need. You are out for eighteen hours and pass nothing open after 20:00.

Skyr, bananas, cucumber sticks, rice cakes, blueberries, plain pasta, cheese. Icelandic shops carry pouches and formula as a backup.

Checking before you go
Rural Icelandic cafés open and close between seasons, and aggregator listings outlive the business. Everything named here was checked in August 2026, but ring or check Facebook the day before for anything outside Reykjavík. The plan never depends on a single café: every rural lunch has a packed fallback.
Where
Bónus is cheapest and shuts earliest, usually 18:30. Krónan runs later. Hafnarfjörður has both, about five minutes from Hlíðarás, so the Selfoss stop on Thursday is optional.

What she can and cannot do
Several of Iceland’s best-known attractions are closed to under-twos. These are the operators’ own rules.
No hard minimum and she needs a child ticket, but they do not recommend it under 5. Babies are seated in the third row near an exit. Dark room, loud, and a sudden blast of heat.
Open. Sneaker waves have killed visitors. Obey the red, amber and green light at the entrance; red also closes the basalt columns and Hálsanefshellir cave. Feb 2026 erosion made the beach steeper.
Adults leave the colonies through the first half of August.
Practical
Before and during
Her car seat
Iceland requires rear-facing to 15 months and 76 cm. At 16 months she may legally turn forward. Nordic guidance is rear-facing to about four, and you will drive roughly 1,700 km. The rules in full.
Seats must carry European approval (i-Size / R129 or ECE R44). A US-certified seat is not legal here. Check the rental seat fits your car in the car park at 00:30, before you drive off.
Carrier and pushchair
The pushchair works in Reykjavík, at Skógafoss, on the Þingvellir boardwalk and at Gullfoss’s upper viewpoint.
Everything else is gravel, wind or steps. The carrier is what opens up the glacier track at Skaftafell, Dyrhólaey, the Arnarstapi cliff path and several hours standing in a field on the 12th.
Weather and roads
Mid-August: about 14 °C by day, 9 °C at night, 8–12 rain days across the month. Wind is the bigger factor. August averages.
For her, every day: waterproof shell, fleece, hat, spares. Check vedur.is the night before, road.is in the morning, and safetravel.is for alerts.
Food, and the Flaga problem
Flaga has no shop. The nearest are the small Krónan in Vík (37 minutes west) and the Kjarval in Kirkjubæjarklaustur (26 minutes east). Neither is a full supermarket.
So the shop at Bónus or Krónan in Selfoss on day 1 carries the whole stay. Open 10:00 to 20:00. Buy for three days, not one.
Skyr, bananas, cucumbers, rye bread and hot dogs are easy toddler food. Nappies, wipes and formula are in every Krónan, Bónus and Lyfja. Tap water is excellent; the hot tap smells of sulphur and is harmless.
Driving
Single-lane bridges, blind rises, sheep on the road. 90 km/h paved, 80 gravel. Slow down when the surface changes; gravel is where rental damage happens.
Off-road driving is illegal. Plan a stop every 90 minutes. N1 and Olís stations have toilets and changing space.
Book before you fly
Not the Jökulsárlón boat: buy that at the lagoon on the day, once you have seen the weather.
Friðheimar greenhouse lunch for Friday. Sells out in August.
Lava Show for Saturday, earliest slot, and tell them her age when you book.
Confirm the check-in time at Flaga, since day 1 arrival depends on it.

Both the eclipse spot and the last day are on the Reykjanes peninsula.
