Vík is outside the path of totality
The umbra crosses only western Iceland: the Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, greater Reykjavík and the Reykjanes peninsula. Vík gets a deep partial of roughly 97%. Totality lengthens the further west you stand, from 59 seconds in central Reykjavík to 1m 48s at the tip of Reykjanes.
Vegagerðin starts traffic management at 08:00 and expects heavy congestion across the west. Roads at Grótta, Ægisíða, Suðurgata and Álftanes are closed or one-way from 15:00 to 20:00.

Grótta is off limits and both shore roads are closed 15:00–20:00.
Kálfatjörn is the shortest viable drive at 1m 28s. Garðskagi adds 25 minutes each way for 1m 43s, toilets, a café and an ocean horizon. Central Reykjavík is closed to cars.
If it is cloudy
Clear-sky odds on the west coast are about one in three. Chasing cloud means Snæfellsnes, four hours from Vík, where Öndverðarnesvegur is closed and shuttle buses run instead. Fix your spot the night before. Totality through thin cloud still drops the light and the temperature.
Pack for a fourteen-hour day out: full tank, all her food and nappies, warm layers, blankets, a torch, water. Roadside stopping is prohibited that day.

Kerið: volcanic crater lake, 700 ISK, free parking, rim path about 15 minutes.
Secret Lagoon at Flúðir: no minimum age, the only well-known geothermal lagoon that admits under-twos. Adults 4,500 ISK, ages 14 and under 260 ISK, up to three children per adult. Open 10:00 to 20:00 in summer.
An hour more driving than option A, and it ends in warm water.
Vík is outside the path, so this day is a drive west and back. The three options differ only in where you stand. Full detail in the eclipse section above.

February 2026 storms stripped sand and exposed boulders, so the beach is steeper than in most photos. Never let her be closer to the water than you are.
Dyrhólaey’s clifftop gives the same view with no wave risk.
Þingvellir: park at the upper car park (P1) and take the boardwalk down Almannagjá. Pushchair works.
Geysir: Strokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes. The ground beside the path is boiling, so carry her or hold her hand.
Friðheimar: lunch inside a working tomato greenhouse. Tomato soup with unlimited bread is about 3,740 ISK. Kitchen serves 11:30 to 16:00. Must be pre-booked and it sells out.
Gullfoss: the upper viewpoint is paved from the car park. The lower stairs are steep and permanently wet.
All short walks, and it ends 20 minutes from the terminal.
Check almannavarnir.is that morning. The eruption series north of Grindavík has been quiet since 5 August 2025, but the Met Office reported in April 2026 that magma storage is the highest of the series so far.
Open. Sneaker waves have killed visitors. Obey the red, amber and green light at the entrance; red also closes the basalt columns and Hálsanefshellir cave. Feb 2026 erosion made the beach steeper.
Adults leave the colonies through the first half of August.
Practical
Before and during
Her car seat
Iceland requires rear-facing to 15 months and 76 cm. At 16 months she may legally turn forward. Nordic guidance is rear-facing to about four, and you will drive roughly 1,500 km. The rules in full.
Seats must carry European approval (i-Size / R129 or ECE R44). A US-certified seat is not legal here. Check the rental seat fits your car in the car park at 00:30, before you drive off.
Carrier and pushchair
The pushchair works in Reykjavík, at Skógafoss, on the Þingvellir boardwalk and at Gullfoss’s upper viewpoint.
Everything else is gravel, wind or steps. The carrier is what opens up Svartifoss, Dyrhólaey, the Arnarstapi path and four hours standing in a field on the 12th.
Weather and roads
Mid-August: about 14 °C by day, 9 °C at night, 8–12 rain days across the month. Wind is the bigger factor. August averages.
For her, every day: waterproof shell, fleece, hat, spares. Check vedur.is the night before, road.is in the morning, and safetravel.is for alerts.
Food and supplies
Big shop at Bónus or Krónan in Selfoss on day 1. Bónus there is open 10:00 to 20:00. Vík has a small Krónan and a few restaurants that fill up.
Skyr, bananas, cucumbers, rye bread and hot dogs are easy toddler food. Nappies, wipes and formula are in every Krónan, Bónus and Lyfja, so do not overpack them.
Tap water is excellent. Hot water smells of sulphur and is harmless.
Driving
Single-lane bridges, blind rises, sheep on the road. 90 km/h paved, 80 gravel. Slow down when the surface changes; gravel is where rental damage happens.
Off-road driving is illegal. Plan a stop every 90 minutes. N1 and Olís stations have toilets and changing space.
Both airport transfers and the eclipse viewing spot are on the Reykjanes peninsula. Exclusion zones and road closures change with hours of notice. Check almannavarnir.is and en.vedur.is.
