Body clock, and why the early starts are fine
Iceland is two hours behind Croatia. A 06:45 start is 08:45 to her, so the early mornings on days 3 and 7 are easier than they look on paper.
That help fades. By the Snæfellsnes day she has been here six days and will have adjusted, so treat the 06:30 start on the 16th as a genuine early start, not a free one.
The offset makes the late finishes worse throughout. Eclipse day ends at 23:36 at the earliest, which is 01:36 to her, and Friday and Sunday both finish after 20:00. Those are the three nights to expect trouble, not the mornings.
Fuel
Icelandic pumps run 24 hours on a card, even when the shop behind them is shut. N1, Olís, ÓB, Orkan and Atlantsolía are all self-service automats. They need a chip-and-PIN card, so check yours has a PIN before you fly; without one you buy a prepaid fuel card in a station shop during opening hours.
Flaga has no fuel. The nearest are N1 Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 26 minutes east, and three stations in Vík, 37 minutes west. All 24/7.
Tuesday: fill at Klaustur on the way home from Jökulsárlón, so Wednesday starts full. It is the only errand that matters that day.
Eclipse day is 525 km. The plan fills twice: N1 Selfoss at 10:05, which is the toilet stop anyway, and N1 Hafnarfjörður at 13:51, the last chance before you park for six hours. From there it is 240 km home. Selfoss, Hvolsvöllur and Vík pumps all work on the way back, but the shops and toilets are shut.
Sunday is 468 km with a long gap in the middle. Fill at N1 Hyrnan in Borgarnes on the way out at 08:18. The next reliable pumps are Grundarfjörður and Ólafsvík, about 135 km on, and the old automat at Vegamót has closed.
The last day: the car goes back full. N1 Njarðvík (Flugvellir 27) is four minutes from the pool, so fill at 18:52 before dinner. Leaving it until 20:45 puts a card authorisation between you and the handover.
Check whether the rental is petrol or diesel and look at the filler flap before the first fill. Misfuelling is not covered by any insurance.
The airport, and what this day assumes
The plan ends when the car goes back at 21:00. Everything after that is unbudgeted: the depot shuttle if your return is at Blikavöllur rather than the terminal, bag drop, and an August security queue that runs 30 to 45 minutes at peak. Realistically you are airside about 22:10 from a terminal return, 22:45 from an off-airport one.
So this day works for a departure at 23:10 or later and not before. Confirm the flight time and whether the rental return is at the terminal, and if the flight is earlier, the pool block is what gives way.
Bag drop closes 45 to 60 minutes before departure. If the car seat is yours it has to be bagged and checked, and someone carries it through the terminal alongside the pushchair and her.
Eclipse glasses: buy them at home
ISO 12312-2 solar viewers, one each. Sunglasses are not a substitute at any darkness. You need them for the partial phases, 16:46 to 17:48 and 17:49 to 18:47. During totality itself, about 1m 05s, everyone can look with bare eyes.
Buy them in Croatia before you fly. You land at 00:30 on the 10th and drive straight east, so you never pass a Reykjavík shop before the 12th, and Icelandic stock is already going. eclipse2026.is and solmyrkvagleraugu.is are the Icelandic sellers if you get stuck, but do not plan around them.
She will not keep a pair on. The sun sits at 24 degrees, low in the west-southwest, so a pushchair hood shades almost nothing: park the pushchair facing east so her back is to it. A pinhole projector or a kitchen colander both occupies her for the 62 minute first partial and keeps her looking down.
The sharp moment is the end of totality, when the sun reappears in under a second. Agree beforehand which of you has her at that moment and does nothing else.
Álftanes on the day
The official viewing area is the shore at the westernmost end of Álftanes, with toilets and food trucks. Garðabær offers exactly three car parks: by the sports centre, Gásamýri and Svanamýri, both about 500 m away. The ground west of the sports area is where the vendors go, not parking.
Note the swimming pool at Álftanes is closed 10 to 17 August for maintenance, so there is no warm room and no changing table. The boot of the car is your changing station, so park where you can get back to it.
Álftanesvegur and Suðurnesvegur go one-way from the Bessastaðir roundabout between 15:00 and 20:00. Garðabær’s actual advice is to set off in good time and expect to stay longer, so aim to be parked by about 13:15 rather than arriving into the peak hour.
Illegally parked cars are towed at the owner’s expense that afternoon. Use a marked car park, not a verge.
Nappies, food and a change of clothes come out of the car and into a bag before you park. You are on that shore for nearly six hours.
Pools: the rules are not optional
Every Icelandic pool requires a naked soap shower before you get in, and it is enforced. At the Secret Lagoon the showers are communal; Vatnaveröld has cubicles.
She needs a swim nappy. The Secret Lagoon has no minimum age and asks for one; take a spare, because you shower again on the way out.
Sleep, in daylight
Sunset is 21:36 at Flaga and 21:55 in Reykjavík, and it stays light well after. Three nights finish after 20:00 and eclipse night ends at 23:36.
Take blackout: a portable blind, or bin bags and masking tape. It is the difference between a bad first night and a bad week.
If something goes wrong
Emergency number is 112, and the free 112 Iceland app sends your coordinates with the call.
Pharmacies are in Selfoss, Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Hafnarfjörður and Reykjavík, and children’s paracetamol is pharmacy-only, not supermarket. Buy a bottle on the day 1 shop in Selfoss rather than hunting for one at 22:00 in Hrífunes.
Iceland is in the EEA, so a Croatian SIM roams at home rates. Coverage is good on every road on this plan and patchy at some car parks.
Two rental-damage traps
Wind takes car doors off their hinges. Hold the door with both hands when you open it, park nose into the wind, and never let her push a door open. Standard CDW does not cover it and it is the most common claim in Iceland.
Sand and ash blasting is the other one, and the south coast between Vík and Klaustur is where it happens. If the forecast shows strong easterlies on a Flaga day, that is the day to check whether your policy includes sand and ash cover.
Afternoon snacks are not optional
Four days run five to six hours between lunch and dinner: Monday, eclipse day, Friday and the last day. On eclipse day the food trucks at Álftanes are the only thing between 12:45 and dinner.
Pack a real afternoon snack every day, not just fruit. She will not last on the gap between a 12:00 lunch and a 19:00 dinner.
Parking apps and fees
Three different systems, so install all three before you fly and add a card to each. Parka: Skógafoss, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Geysir, Jökulsárlón and both Diamond Beach lots, Reynisfjara, Dyrhólaey, and the whole of Snæfellsjökull National Park (Djúpalónssandur, Lóndrangar and Malarrif on one 1,110 ISK ticket, new since 6 August). checkit.is: Seljalandsfoss, Þingvellir, Ytri-Tunga. EasyPark: Kirkjufell only.
Roughly 750 to 1,400 ISK a stop. Gullfoss is free at both car parks. Kirkjufell fines you 4,500 ISK for not paying, and the camera-enforced ones bill the rental company, which adds its own fee on top. Signal is patchy at some car parks, so pay before you walk off.
Reykjavík city centre is separate. Hallgrímskirkja is in zone P2, 240 ISK an hour, charged 10:00 to 21:00 on a Saturday, and the old free lot by the church is now inside the zone. Parka covers it. Grandi is free at the Lava Show’s own car park.
Her car seat
Iceland requires rear-facing to 15 months and 76 cm. At 16 months she may legally turn forward. Nordic guidance is rear-facing to about four, and you will drive roughly 1,700 km. The rules in full.
Seats must carry European approval (i-Size / R129 or ECE R44). A US-certified seat is not legal here. Check the rental seat fits your car in the car park at 00:30, before you drive off.
Carrier and pushchair
The pushchair works in Reykjavík, at Skógafoss, on the Þingvellir boardwalk and at Gullfoss’s upper viewpoint.
Everything else is gravel, wind or steps. The carrier is what opens up Dyrhólaey, the Arnarstapi cliff path, the walk onto Svalþúfa at Lóndrangar and six hours standing on a shore on the 12th.
Weather and roads
Mid-August: about 14 °C by day, 9 °C at night, 8–12 rain days across the month. Wind is the bigger factor. August averages.
For her, every day: waterproof shell, fleece, hat, spares. Check vedur.is the night before, road.is in the morning, and safetravel.is for alerts.
Food, and the Flaga problem
Flaga has no shop. The nearest are the small Krónan in Vík (37 minutes west) and the Kjarval in Kirkjubæjarklaustur (26 minutes east). Neither is a full supermarket.
So the shop at Bónus or Krónan in Selfoss on day 1 carries the whole stay. Open 10:00 to 20:00. Buy for three days, not one.
Skyr, bananas, cucumbers, rye bread and hot dogs are easy toddler food. Nappies, wipes and formula are in every Krónan, Bónus and Lyfja. Tap water is excellent; the hot tap smells of sulphur and is harmless.
Driving
Single-lane bridges, blind rises, sheep on the road. 90 km/h paved, 80 gravel. Slow down when the surface changes; gravel is where rental damage happens.
Off-road driving is illegal. Plan a stop every 90 minutes. N1 and Olís stations have toilets and changing space.
Sunday, and the last shop
Sunday is the Snæfellsnes day and you are not home until about 19:15. Icelandic supermarkets keep short Sunday hours and Bónus usually shuts at 18:00.
Saturday is the real shop: Sunday dinner, Monday breakfast and the Reykjanes picnic in one go. Do it at Krónan Granda, Fiskislóð 15-21, 400 m from the Lava Show car park and open to 21:00, so it costs no extra driving. Sunday dinner should be something that only needs reheating.
Worth asking the hosts
Whether Hlíðarás has a washing machine. Four days in with a 16-month-old, it is the difference between packing for eight days and packing for four.
Flaga’s check-in and checkout times. Monday lands you there at 17:20, and Thursday you leave at 10:15.
Book before you fly
The Jökulsárlón boat, but not until Monday evening at Flaga, once you have seen Tuesday’s wind. Full refund if you cancel more than 24 hours ahead.
Lava Show: two adult tickets on the 16:00 and 17:00 slots on Saturday, one each, 13,180 ISK. Shows run hourly on the hour.
