Shop at Krónan or Bónus in Selfoss about 17:15 on the way through, so you arrive with food. Hafnarfjörður has its own Bónus and Krónan five minutes away if you would rather stop there. After a 5 h 20 driving day, cook something 20 minutes long.

On an August Sunday at 12:00 there may be a wait, so have the picnic in the boot as the fallback and eat it at Arnarstapi instead.

Shopping
Two shops, and Flaga has no shop
The nearest food to Flaga is the small Krónan in Vík, 37 minutes west, or the shop at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 26 minutes east. Neither is a supermarket. So the Selfoss shop on day 1 has to cover three days.

Pasta and a jar of sauce; lamb chops or salmon fillets, potatoes and a bag of salad. Both are ten minute meals in a small shared kitchen.
Eclipse day, the 12th
Soup for the thermos, extra bread, more snacks and water than seems sensible. You are out for fifteen hours and will pass nothing open after 20:00.
For her
Skyr, bananas, cucumber sticks, rice cakes, blueberries, plain pasta, cheese. Icelandic shops carry pouches and formula if you want a backup.

Where
Bónus is cheapest and shuts earliest, usually 18:30. Krónan runs later. Hafnarfjörður has both, about five minutes from Hlíðarás, so the Selfoss stop on Thursday is optional.
Age limits
What she can and cannot do
Several of Iceland’s best-known attractions are closed to under-twos. These are the operators’ own rules.
No hard minimum and she needs a child ticket, but they do not recommend it under 5. Babies are seated in the third row near an exit. Dark room, loud, and a sudden blast of heat.
Open. Sneaker waves have killed visitors. Obey the red, amber and green light at the entrance; red also closes the basalt columns and Hálsanefshellir cave. Feb 2026 erosion made the beach steeper.
Adults leave the colonies through the first half of August.
Practical
Before and during
Her car seat
Iceland requires rear-facing to 15 months and 76 cm. At 16 months she may legally turn forward. Nordic guidance is rear-facing to about four, and you will drive roughly 1,700 km. The rules in full.
Seats must carry European approval (i-Size / R129 or ECE R44). A US-certified seat is not legal here. Check the rental seat fits your car in the car park at 00:30, before you drive off.
Carrier and pushchair
The pushchair works in Reykjavík, at Skógafoss, on the Þingvellir boardwalk and at Gullfoss’s upper viewpoint.
Everything else is gravel, wind or steps. The carrier is what opens up Svartifoss, Dyrhólaey, the Arnarstapi path and several hours standing in a field on the 12th.
Weather and roads
Mid-August: about 14 °C by day, 9 °C at night, 8–12 rain days across the month. Wind is the bigger factor. August averages.
For her, every day: waterproof shell, fleece, hat, spares. Check vedur.is the night before, road.is in the morning, and safetravel.is for alerts.
Food, and the Flaga problem
Flaga has no shop. The nearest are the small Krónan in Vík (37 minutes west) and the Kjarval in Kirkjubæjarklaustur (26 minutes east). Neither is a full supermarket.
So the shop at Bónus or Krónan in Selfoss on day 1 matters more than it would have from Vík. Open 10:00 to 20:00. Buy for three days, not one.
Skyr, bananas, cucumbers, rye bread and hot dogs are easy toddler food. Nappies, wipes and formula are in every Krónan, Bónus and Lyfja. Tap water is excellent; the hot tap smells of sulphur and is harmless.
Driving
Single-lane bridges, blind rises, sheep on the road. 90 km/h paved, 80 gravel. Slow down when the surface changes; gravel is where rental damage happens.
Off-road driving is illegal. Plan a stop every 90 minutes. N1 and Olís stations have toilets and changing space.
Friðheimar greenhouse lunch for Friday. Sells out in August.
Lava Show for Saturday, earliest slot, and tell them her age when you book.
Confirm the check-in time at Flaga, since day 1 arrival depends on it.
Check every morning you go near Reykjanes
Both the eclipse spot and the last day are on the Reykjanes peninsula. The eruption series north of Grindavík has been quiet since 5 August 2025, but the Met Office reported in April 2026 that magma storage is the highest of the series so far. Exclusion zones and road closures change with hours of notice. Check almannavarnir.is and en.vedur.is.
